What is sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI)? Why use it instead of Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA) to make foam?
SCI is an extremely gentle, plant based surfactant. It is made from renewable coconut oil and is fully biodegradable. It helps lift dirt and oil, hydrate hair and skin and creates a creamy foaming lather. It It is effective in hard and soft water. It works by lowering the surface tension of water and helps water cling to dirt and oil on the skin, allowing it to be easily washed away.
SLSA, also known as Lathanol powder, is a popular ingredient in foaming bath soaks and bath bombs. However it is made with palm oil. I wanted a palm oil free alternative.
Why use Optiphen preservative?
It's a paraben, formaldehyde free preservative that protects against bacteria, yeast and mold growth. For bath and spa products, preservatives are generally needed if they contain water or may be in contact with water. There is no water in these bath salts, but there is a chance of moisture from being stored in the bathroom or water might be splashed in/near the package, Optiphen has been added.
